How can you really fix the nasty smell that has invaded your kitchen sink? Here are some tips to clean your garbage disposal so that it doesn’t stink.
- Clean the area around the disposal.
If you’re having issues with your garbage disposal smelling, it might work simply to make sure the area around the disposal is clean. Your regular sink cleanser could do the trick. Pay careful attention to the drain area, the drain covers and strainer basket, top and bottom. Don’t forget the base of the faucet itself, the spray heads and aerators, especially if your area has hard water problems.
- Try citrus fruits and peels.
The best way to use this freshening system is to cut an orange or lemon into quarters. Put one quarter, peel and all, down into the drain with the disposal unit. Run the garbage disposal until it stops grinding and then a few seconds more. Each time you eat or cook with one of these fruits, save a quarter (or the entire peel) for the disposal.
- Use salt and ice.
Though some people will tell you that using ice sharpens the blades in a disposal, the truth is that most units nowadays don’t even use blades. Instead, they use a grinding method to pulverize food and send it down the drain properly. A mixture of salt and ice will, however, help to clean the drain.
- Occasionally use baking soda and vinegar.
The chemical combination of baking soda and vinegar mostly just makes a lot of froth and isn’t very effective as an all-purpose cleaning agent. However, the fizzy reaction caused by the collision of this power duo is actually great for pulling up any lingering residue from your drain and disposal unit. This combination helps with odors, too.
With just a little extra effort each time you use your garbage disposal, you can keep it and the drain smelling fresh, so that you can enjoy the aromas of today’s dinner cooking instead of an unpleasant reminder of yesterday’s meal.
